Glossary

Aquifer

An underground layer of water-bearing permeable rock, rock fractures or unconsolidated materials (gravel, sand, or silt).  May be confined between layers (for example clay) or unconfined.  Reference : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquifer

Bore

Vertical hole drilled into the ground to access the groundwater / water table.

Data Loggers

Electronic device which records measurements electronically over time.  In groundwater investigations, they can be fully submersible, and when calibrated with barometric loggers (which measure the atmosphere pressure), these devices can indicate the height of the standing water level in the groundwater / aquifer.

DEM

Digital Elevation model.
A 3 dimensional computer graphical representation of the earths surface. Reference : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_elevation_model

DSE

The Department of Sustainability and Environment was a state government department that managed water resources, climate change, bushfires, public land, forests and eco systems in the state of Victoria, Australia. The DSE is now under the branch name The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DEWLP) found at delwp.vic.gov.au

Geospatial

Geological (study of rocks) application of Spatial data.

Geovisualisations

Geovisualization or Geovisualisation, short for Geographic Visualization, refers to a set of tools and techniques supporting the analysis of geospatial data through the use of interactive visualization.  Reference : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geovisualization

Groundwater

Water held underground in the soil, in pores and/or crevices in rock

hydrostratigraphic

Rock layers containing or  related to groundwater

Interoperability

The Ability of computer systems or software to exchange and make use of information.  i.e. 'interoperability between devices made by different maufacturers'

Lithological

Physical characteristics in relation to rock or rock types

Metadata

Data (Information) that provides information about other data. 3 types exist : descriptive (identifies a resource i.e. title, abstract, author etc), structural (describes how pages form chapters etc) and administrative (who, when and how a file was created).  reference : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metadata

Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC)

The  Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) is an international not for profit organization committed to making quality open standards for the global geospatial community. These standards are made through a consensus process and are freely available for anyone to use to improve sharing of the world's geospatial data. Reference : http://www.opengeospatial.org

Salinity

The amount of salt (ionic compounds, not necessarily 'table salt' or sodium chloride) found within water. The 'saltiness' of water.

Spatial

Spatial information is the digital connection between location, people and activities. This information can graphically (use picture representation) illustrate what is happening (where, how and why) to show the insight and impact of the past, the present and the (likely) future.  The knowledge produced by spatial information is fundamental to the lives of every Australian and New Zealander.  It ends with a map. Water table

An unconfined aquifer(body of water) which is  below the ground surface. Lakes, rivers etc. are examples of the water table is visible.
